WeatherBug StormChase 2002 Team Hits the Road in Search of Tornadoes
Four-Man Team Cruises Tornado Alley for Two Weeks, Bringing the Movie "Twister" to Life; Web Users Can Track the Team Online at www.weatherbug.com/stormchase2002
Gaithersburg, MD - May 21, 2002 - Four young, wide-eyed weather enthusiasts have hit the road on a two-week journey through the Midwest during the height of the tornado season on a quest to see as many storms as they possibly can. The expedition, called the WeatherBug StormChase 2002, runs through May 30. Weather enthusiasts and Web surfers can follow the action at www.weatherbug.com/stormchase2002, a special site that features a daily diary, photos and streaming video, or within the WeatherBug application itself.
A real-life version of the movie "Twister," the WeatherBug StormChasers, who hail from Europe, will drive 500-700 miles per day through treacherous areas of Texas and Oklahoma widely known as Tornado Alley. The team plans to rely on intuition, experience, lady luck and online Weather tools, such as WeatherBug (www.weatherbug.com), a real-time weather software application, to map out a journey that enables the greatest number of sightings.
The WeatherBug StormChase 2002 team - Verijn Stuart, Ron Groenland, Eric Terpstra and Jules Geirneardt - will rely on a high-tech arsenal that includes a laptop, a digital video camera, a high-end digital camera and a GPS receiver with route-mapping software, a cell phone and a small television. The crew plans to sleep in their rented van on most nights.
The four meteorologists have been interested in weather since their youth and they continually strive to learn as much as they can - especially first-hand. "We will do what it takes to get us to the best area to experience tornado activity on any given day," says Geirneardt. "Furthermore, it is a good opportunity to have a grand tour of the country!"
WeatherBug, a free weather software application that provides a constant stream of real-time neighborhood weather conditions, severe weather warnings and more to 10 million PC desktops, is the exclusive sponsor of the team. WeatherBug is available for download at www.weatherbug.com/.
