AWS Convergence Technologies Launches Energy Services Division with Instantaneous Weather Information and Analysis Solutions for the Energy Industry

AWS WeatherNet network of over 5000 weather stations powers unique products and services developed specifically to meet energy industry needs

AEP Energy Services, Inc. and Constellation Power Source sign on as initial beta customers

Gaithersburg, MD (April 22, 2002) - AWS Convergence Technologies, Inc, which owns and operates the world's largest network of weather monitoring stations, today launched AWS Energy Services (www.aws.com/energy), a new division that is developing comprehensive weather information and analysis technology for energy traders, weather risk managers, gas transmission and electric distribution professionals. In addition, the company announced that AEP Energy Services, Inc. and Constellation Power Source have signed on as initial Energy Services beta customers (see separate press releases).

Early next quarter, AWS Energy Services will begin shipping a suite of Web-based products and services that will for the first time enable up-to-the-second tracking and analysis of weather trends that impact electricity and gas price changes and distribution. These products will be powered by the vast AWS WeatherNet network, which includes more than 5,000 automated monitoring stations across the U.S. It is the largest network of its kind - the only one that can reliably measure weather conditions and instantaneously deliver this information and associated analysis to end users.

"For the first time, the energy industry has access to instantaneous and highly granular weather data, not just information from airports that can be several hours old," said Bob Marshall, CEO, AWS Convergence Technologies. "This is a significant advancement for energy trading operations. Our beta customers have found tremendous value because their traders and risk managers are quickly trading on real-time weather and energy demand projections that were not possible before. They have the capability to catch market trends earlier - identify inaccurate forecast data, anticipate price spikes and track changing weather conditions much more closely. These capabilities could net tens of millions of dollars."

Marshall went on to add that the company has tapped Jim Anderson as its Director of Energy Services, a new position. Anderson will guide the development and launch of products and his expertise will ensure that all AWS products will fulfill specific industry needs.

AWS Energy Services will launch three products later this year. All are currently being tested by corporate customers at 12 "beta" sites around the country. These products include:

  • MesoStreamer™ - an instantaneous weather data service specifically designed for energy traders.
  • WeatherArray™ - a custom network of weather stations that can be installed for weather risk managers and gas transmission professionals.
  • WeatherNet Data - real-time and historical data from all 5000 WeatherNet stations.
