KTSM-TV El Paso Texas and AWS Convergence Technologies
Team to Deliver Live Neighborhood Weather Broadcasts
Gaithersburg,
MD, February 26, 2002 - AWS Convergence Technologies, Inc., which owns
and operates the largest weather network in the world, today announced that
KTSM-TV (NewsChannel 9) El Paso, Texas will join its WeatherNet program.
Under the terms of the exclusive agreement, NewsChannel 9 will join the
WeatherNet program under the name WeatherZone, and will incorporate into its
broadcasts real-time weather data and images from five WeatherNet Weather
Stations and one WeatherNet Camera that it has deployed around the metro
area. Each WeatherNet Weather Station
is equipped with technology that will enable NewsChannel to provide viewers
with unparalleled real-time conditions on-air and online through NewsChannel
9’s web site and a custom version of WeatherBug.
Also as part of their alliance, NewsChannel 9 will donate three more
weather stations for use into area schools.
With an emphasis on furthering technology in the classroom, NewsChannel
9 will work closely with local schools to provide training information on how
to incorporate WeatherZone into science, math and computer curriculums.
“The most attractive aspect of
WeatherZone is its diverse application as an educational tool, an on-air tool
and an internet tool to help create community identity through the weather.
There's something great about waking up in the morning and knowing what it's
like just up the street, rather than 20 miles away-- and having that
information at your fingertips,” said NewsChannel 9 Director, Eric Pearson.
“The market exclusivity of WeatherZone gives NewsChannel 9 the unique
ability to provide our viewers with the most up-to-date, live, local weather
data in the region. As a result, WeatherZone has positively influenced our Web
site traffic, ratings and relationship with the community,” commented Chief
Meteorologist Chuck DeBroder.
