WeatherBug® Closes $23M Financing; Tech, Media Industry Veterans Join Board

Gaithersburg, MD

Gaithersburg, MD -- April 29, 2004 - WeatherBug®, known to millions through the popular Internet application and through local broadcast television partners, today announced that its parent company, AWS Convergence Technologies, has secured $23 million in financing. The investment round included Sequoia Capital and Polaris Ventures, both new investors, as well as HarbourVest, the lead in the company’s initial financing.

Over the past four years, AWS has posted total revenue growth of over 380% with substantial profit growth. The financing announcement comes on the heels of a significant new partnership with AOL Instant Messenger® to launch an integrated service, announced last week.

Sequoia and Polaris are marquee names in the venture capital world. Sequoia has backed tech/Internet stalwarts such as Yahoo!, Google, Cisco, 3Com and Electronic Arts. Two of the more notable companies in Polaris’ portfolio include Akamai and Centra Software

WeatherBug has added two partners from Sequoia and Polaris to its Board. Each is a veteran in the industries that WeatherBug intersects -- technology and media.

Michael Moritz, Partner at Sequoia, will join the AWS Board of Directors, marking the first time he has taken a Board seat on an east coast company. Moritz focuses on information technology investments. He is currently a Director of Flextronics, RedEnvelope, Plaxo, and Google.

"There is one universal topic. It isn't sex, money, or health. It is weather. WeatherBug provides the most comprehensive vocabulary for any discussion about weather. It's a vocabulary that should grow larger and richer with time and, with any luck, should gradually become familiar to every internet user, television viewer, newspaper reader or radio listener," said Moritz.

Alan Spoon, Managing General Partner at Polaris and media industry veteran, will also join the AWS Board. Spoon was formerly President of the Washington Post Company, and previously President of Newsweek. He fostered the Post's expansion in broadcast television, cable, education (Kaplan), online and wireless markets. At Polaris he focuses on IT and media investments. In addition, he is a board member of Interactive Corp., Danaher, Inc., a Regent of the Smithsonian Institution, and a member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Corporation.

"By a wide margin, WeatherBug has the largest, most-localized and best-networked real-time weather data system. WeatherBug’s quality and signature brand are recognized by millions who access it on the Internet, see it on local TV news in 100 markets, or learn from it in science classrooms across the country," Spoon said. "The team at AWS has excelled in bringing together a large, informed, and fast-growing community that is ripe for media development."

AWS President, CEO and co-founder Bob Marshall added: "We are extremely honored to add such great firms and Board members to our team. We look forward to working with our usual intense focus and desire to win to deliver the best weather to our users and take this business to new heights."
