Gaithersburg, MD, September 10, 2003 - AWS Convergence Technologies today unveiled NetCam, an affordable, premium technology product for broadcasters that captures live images for use on-air. NetCam is programmable for 16 different pre-set positions and can pan, tilt and zoom all via a Web-based console. It enables local television meteorologists to easily and quickly incorporate live images from across their viewing area into their weathercasts without having to leave their desks.
NetCam is the newest member of an integrated professional broadcast suite that includes WeatherNet Zoom, an advanced, digital on-air display system, and WeatherNet, a nationwide network of more than 6,000 real-time weather monitoring stations. When used together, the suite gives broadcasters a significant competitive advantage in their DMA. Currently, WeatherNet's live weather data, images and advanced technology are used on-air and online by more than 100 affiliates around the U.S., including eight out of the top 10 markets.
"It's easy to talk about a major weather event, like a snowstorm or tornado, but it's much more powerful when you can show live images and how it is impacting different portions of your viewing area without having to set foot outside," said Bob Onsi, Director of WeatherNet products for AWS. "NetCam and Zoom make this possible, all at a fraction of the cost of competitive on-air technologies."
NetCam captures broadcast quality live images and time-lapse video of events such as fast-moving storm fronts, snow accumulations, meteor showers and more, and transmits them back to the study via the Internet, a far more cost effective alternative compared to traditional microwave. The system can also broadcast images online through WeatherBug, a downloadable applet used by 25 million consumers nationwide that reaches viewers 24/7.
NetCam also empowers AWS broadcast partners to create unique sponsorship opportunities that they can bring to a local advertiser. Sponsors can brand on-air and online images for a high-impact association with valuable, relevant information that serves the audience right in their neighborhoods. The system can also be used by producers and reporters to directly view and capture images for live traffic updates, beauty shots and more.
